Open Air Modern is a Williamsburg-based specialty secondhand store that focuses on art and design publications alongside vintage midcentury-modern furniture. Founded in January 2004 and formerly named Airstream Books, Open Air Modern relocated to Lorimer Street, nearby McCarren Park in August 2009.

Open Air Modern was established when founder Matt Singer, a former sculptor and printmaker, set out to create mid-century design furniture showroom that would encompass his design philosophy and taste for twentieth-century design architecture and books. Singer's persistence resulted in him sourcing American modern pieces alongside complement post-war Scandinavian furniture. A harmonious curation of Scandinavian simplicity and American icons has gained Open Air Modern an international following. Singers scouting includes an extensive book collection that's made up of hundreds of used and out-of-print design, art, architecture, fashion and photography books.

Occupying a former garage, the storefront is made up of a wall of industrial windows while the driveway to Open Air Modern is now a garden, with raised beds of vegetables and flowers. Inside, original cement flooring remains having been grounded and polished, while the ceiling has been insulated with recycled wool. The Open Air Modern website and visual identity was completed by New York-based design agency Works Great.

A highly-recommended design destination, Open Air Modern's selection of curated vintage furniture and hand-culled design library is worth a visit.
