Hidden away behind an unassuming black façade is Berry & Rye, Liverpool's go-to speakeasy. Opened in 2012, the prohibition-era inspired bar specialises in whiskey, blues, jazz and gin and is committed to old-school service and carefully crafted libations.

The intimate bar becomes very crowded and has limited capacity, so arrive early or with plenty of charm to snag a spot in this softly lit, cosy tavern. On our visit we were handed an antique novel containing the drinks list hidden inside, a small nod to the concealed nature of the venue.

The interior, with its dim lighting, vintage furnishings and exposed brick draws inspiration from 1920s American underground dives. The connection between America and Liverpool is well-documented and this relationship is celebrated in Berry & Rye's classic stateside offerings. Our favourite is the house cocktail, the Kentucky-created Old Fashioned (Bourbon, Sugar Syrup, Angostura Bitters).

According to owner Danny Murphy, the independent spirit is alive and kicking in Liverpool, "I class Liverpudlians as a non-conformist people. We are fiercely proud of who we are, regardless of whether that fits into an outsider's view of how we should be. That is reflected in our fashions and habits and that, I think, breeds a culture where independent and niche businesses can thrive".

If your visit coincides with the first Sunday of every month, make sure you attend the Berry Bake off, a hotly contested competition featuring Liverpool's local culinary talent. Tickets bag you a seasonal drink on arrival and five irresistable puddings but make sure you book in advance, the night is very popular.
